Library of Congress Awards Event Production

Lighting and audio for the inaugural Dwight D Opperman Excellence in Leadership Award

The Dwight D. Opperman Foundation's inaugural award brought a distinguished program to the Library of Congress. An evening honoring John Travolta, retired U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, HRH Ambassador Reema Bandar Al-Saud and Dolly Parton brought the inaugural Dwight D. Opperman Excellence in Leadership Award to the Library of Congress on November 1, 2026. TriVision supported the evening with lighting and audio.

The engagement

Travolta was recognized as a Cultural Icon, Kennedy for Service to Justice, and Ambassador Reema, Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the United States, for Service to Diplomacy. Parton was recognized posthumously for Philanthropy. The Thomas Jefferson Building in Washington, D.C., provided a setting with a presence of its own: marble columns, mosaics, painted ceilings and galleries overlooking the Great Hall.

The production spanned distinct environments, from the red-carpet setting and formal ceremony room to dinner and music in the Great Hall. Preparing those spaces meant coordinating the technical work with the building's access requirements, the program and the room around each lighting position.

The program called for different experiences within one venue: arrivals and photographs, a seated ceremony, and dinner with music in the Great Hall. Each area had its own purpose. The red-carpet backdrop created a place for event photographs; the ceremony room concentrated attention on the award presentations; and the galleries held a more expansive dining setting. Lighting and audio connected TriVision's work to each part of the evening, with the Foundation's program and the Library's architecture providing the context.

What the production included

TriVision's contribution centered on the lighting and audio that supported the evening:

  • Lighting for the presentation environment and audio for the live event
  • Planning around the building and the program
  • Elevated lighting positions in the ceremony room
  • White-sleeved lighting uprights among the tables and chairs
  • Lighting the galleries for dinner and music
  • A lighting operator at control screens overlooking the hall
  • Advance coordination and on-site work

A live evening supported from behind the scenes

The Library's columns, balustrades and galleries were central to the atmosphere, and they also shaped the practical work. Equipment placement had to be considered alongside tables, chairs and the spaces guests would use. The planning discussions addressed lighting positions, available power and the footprint of stands near attendee areas.

Access required its own coordination. Planning covered approved access windows, loading and elevator availability, and crew and vehicle movements alongside the production requirements. On site, the work continued around the gallery's furnishings and architecture. Crew conferred beside the balustrade, prepared equipment near the columns and positioned white-sleeved lighting uprights among the tables and chairs. These were practical, room-specific decisions within a setting where both the building and the guest space remained prominent.

The formal program took place in a different visual environment from the Great Hall. Dark woodwork, rows of chairs and a lectern established a more focused setting for the award presentations. The production preparation included elevated lighting positions in that room, with fixtures placed alongside its existing architectural details.

The room moved from a working setup to a seated live program. An elevated fixture stood alongside the carved woodwork, while the lectern and microphone established the speaker position. Flags, flowers and the room's artwork framed the presentations. As the ceremony unfolded, audience members faced the lectern and participants seated at the front. TriVision's lighting and audio contribution supported this more focused part of the evening before the story continued in the larger spaces of the Great Hall.

String musicians performed among the marble columns, and guests gathered in the hall below the gallery. Yellow, amber and pink light appeared across the architectural surfaces, creating an evening atmosphere that complemented the building's existing color and detail. The long views through the galleries made the room itself part of the experience. From the elevated control position, the illuminated columns and occupied gathering spaces stayed in view as the lighting production continued around the live event.

The production came into use across the ceremony and Great Hall. Guests gathered in the illuminated space, musicians performed and speakers addressed the room from microphones. A lighting operator worked at control screens overlooking the hall, with crew and equipment positioned nearby. The work behind the scenes stayed closely connected to the room throughout the evening.

TriVision's November 1 assignment brought lighting and audio together for a prestigious awards occasion inside one of Washington's most distinctive buildings. Advance coordination and on-site work supported different program spaces without making them look interchangeable: the formal ceremony room retained its character, and the Great Hall became a warm setting for dinner and music. After the event, the team reported its venue exit and return to TriVision. The production closed with a live awards program and an evening spent among the Library of Congress's unmistakable architecture.
